Solar + Standing Seam Metal
Solar-Ready Metal Roofing for Dallas-Fort Worth Homes
If solar is in your plans, the roof under the panels matters as much as the panels. A standing seam metal roof lets the array clamp onto the seams with no holes through the roof, and it typically outlasts the panels instead of forcing a tear-off halfway through their life. We build the solar-ready roof and coordinate the attachment plan with your licensed solar installer.

Can you put solar panels on a metal roof?
Yes. Standing seam metal is widely regarded as the easiest residential roof to mount solar on, because clamps grip the raised seams and nothing pierces the weathering surface. Other roofs work too, with more holes involved:
- Standing seam: clamp-on mounts, no penetrations for the attachments
- Corrugated and R-panel: brackets fasten through the panel ribs into the structure and must be sealed
- Metal shingles and stone-coated steel: flashed, penetrating mounts much like asphalt
- Asphalt shingles: lag bolts through the shingles into the rafters, each one flashed
How do clamp-on (S-5!-style) solar attachments work?
A clamp slides over the standing seam and is tightened with set screws that grip the seam without puncturing it. Rails or rail-less mounts bolt to the clamps, and the panels attach to those. The details that make it work:
- The clamp must match the seam. Snap-lock and mechanically seamed panels each need a clamp designed for that seam shape, so the clamp never pries a snap-lock seam open.
- Spacing is engineered. The solar designer sets clamp count and spacing for local wind loads, with more at roof edges and corners. Loads travel through the seam to the concealed clips and deck, so we fasten clips to the schedule the array design calls for.
- Panel layout is planned. Residential panels run 12 to 18 inches wide with 1- to 2-inch seams, and we pick widths with the racking layout in mind.
- Wiring stays off the metal. Wire clips attach to the mounts. The conduit may need one flashed entry or can run over the roof edge; we detail that route before panels go up.
Why does a metal roof pair better with solar than shingles in Texas?
Because the roof should outlive the array. Solar panels are commonly warrantied for about 25 years, while a shingle roof in DFW heat typically lasts 15 to 20, so a solar-on-shingle home usually faces a paid remove-and-reinstall of the array partway through.
| Factor | Asphalt shingles | Standing seam metal |
|---|---|---|
| Typical service life in DFW | 15-20 years | 40-70 years |
| Against a roughly 25-year panel warranty | Likely replaced before the panels retire | Typically outlasts the panels |
| Solar attachment | Lag bolts through shingles, each flashed | Clamps on seams, no mount penetrations |
| Sun on exposed roof areas | Dark granules absorb heat | Cool-pigment PVDF finishes reflect more of it |
| Class 4 impact options | Yes | Yes, on many tested systems |
| Typical installed price (2026) | About $5.00-$8.50 per sq ft | Typically $10-$18 per sq ft |
Should you replace your roof before installing solar?
If your shingle roof is more than about halfway through its 15-to-20-year Texas life, yes. Re-roofing first avoids paying to pull and reset the array later. Roof age also affects insurance, since many carriers move roofs older than 10 to 20 years to actual cash value at renewal, and once panels cover a slope, hail damage underneath becomes a two-contractor job. If you would rather stay with shingles, at least choose Class 4 asphalt shingles.
What Texas laws, HOA rules and storms affect solar on a DFW roof?
Texas law strongly protects your right to add solar, and a 2025 bill widened that protection. Hail, wind and heat are the bigger practical concerns.
Can an HOA block solar panels in Texas?
Texas Property Code §202.010 bars HOAs from prohibiting solar energy devices. An association can still regulate devices that threaten health or safety or violate the law, sit on common property, are placed somewhere other than the roof or a fenced yard or patio, extend above or beyond the roofline, or go in without required prior approval. HB 431, effective September 1, 2025, made clear that solar roof tiles count as solar energy devices. For the roof itself, §202.011 protects wind- and hail-resistant shingles, including shingles that generate solar power, when they resemble the subdivision’s approved look. Standing seam panels are not named in that statute, so we submit to architectural review with samples and a drawing that keeps the array inside the roofline.
How do hail, wind and heat affect a solar roof here?
Texas has led the nation in major hail events for 11 straight years, and on April 28, 2026 preliminary reports put 4.5-inch hail near Cresson and Godley, south of Fort Worth. Ask your solar installer about the panels’ own hail ratings, tell your insurer about the array, and check your policy for a cosmetic-damage exclusion on the metal. Wind drives clamp spacing: DFW has seen gusts near 80 mph (May 2024) and 105 mph straight-line winds in Haltom City (March 2025). Heat matters too. DFW sits in climate zone 3A and averages about 20 days a year at or above 100°F, and panels lose some output as they heat up, so the air gap over a reflective metal roof works in your favor.
Are there solar tax credits or rebates in 2026?
Not federal ones for homeowners. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed in July 2025, ended both the 25C energy-efficient home improvement credit and the 25D residential clean energy credit that covered rooftop solar, for installations completed after December 31, 2025. We do not advertise rebates we cannot verify. Utility and retail electric provider programs change every year, so confirm any incentive directly with the provider and a tax professional before you count on it.
What does a solar-ready metal roof cost in DFW (as of 2026)?
About the same as any quality standing seam roof: typically $10 to $18 per square foot installed as of 2026, or roughly $20,000 to $36,000 for a 2,000-square-foot roof. Planning for solar during installation is mostly layout and coordination time. The price moves with steel gauge (24 versus 26), finish (Kynar 500 PVDF versus SMP), roof pitch and complexity, and tear-off and decking. We price the roof; your licensed solar installer prices the array.
How do we coordinate the roof and the solar install?
We build the roof, and a licensed solar installer handles panels, inverters, wiring and utility interconnection. Our job is making sure the two fit:
- We review the proposed array against your roof planes before ordering panels.
- Panel widths and clip spacing are set for the clamps and the wind design.
- The roof goes on over high-temperature underlayment rated to 240°F or more.
- Your solar installer gets the seam profile, compatible clamp types and the conduit route in writing.
- After the array is mounted, we walk the attachments with you so warranty responsibilities are clear.
When is a different roof the better choice?
If solar is not in your plans, our metal roofing page covers standing seam on its own merits, and the lifetime roofing guide compares long-life options. Budget-first homeowners should look at Class 4 shingles, and shops or barndominiums with solar plans can use R-panel with sealed rib brackets. What Dallas-Fort Worth Homeowners Say About Texas Metal Panels
Solar on metal roofing FAQ
Can you put solar panels on a metal roof?
Yes. Standing seam is the simplest: clamps grip the seams with no holes through the roof. Exposed-fastener corrugated and R-panel roofs use sealed brackets through the ribs, and metal shingles or stone-coated steel need flashed mounts similar to asphalt.
Is a standing seam roof good for solar?
It is the best pairing we install. The roof typically lasts 40 to 70 years, longer than panels commonly warrantied for about 25, and clamp-on mounts avoid roof penetrations while the raised seams give the racking a straight, strong attachment line.
Do solar panels void a roof warranty?
Clamp-on mounts that do not pierce the panels are the least likely to cause a warranty problem, but terms vary by manufacturer, so we confirm them and put the attachment plan in writing before the array goes up. Unplanned penetrations by others can affect coverage at those spots.
Should I replace my roof before installing solar?
If the roof is more than about halfway through its expected life, yes. In DFW that usually means a shingle roof older than about 8 to 10 years, since Texas heat limits shingles to roughly 15 to 20. Re-roofing first avoids paying to remove and reinstall the array.
How much does solar cost in Texas?
Your licensed solar installer prices the array; we do not quote solar systems. Keep in mind the federal 25D homeowner solar credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. The standing seam roof under the panels typically runs $10 to $18 per sq ft as of 2026.
Can my HOA stop me from installing solar panels in Texas?
Generally not. Texas Property Code §202.010 bars HOAs from prohibiting solar devices, with limited exceptions such as safety, common property, devices extending above or beyond the roofline, and required prior approval. Since September 1, 2025, HB 431 also covers solar roof tiles.
